When Nina was 10 years old, her mother often took her along the beach and river, visiting polluted areas. Nina was very sad to see the amount of plastic waste scattered around.
Nina grew up to be a teenager who cared about environmental sustainability. She was worried about the mountains of plastic waste in her hometown, not decreasing but increasing and new waste continues to increase every year. Her worry increased when she found out that the fish in the river near her house in Wringinanom, Gresik were polluted by plastic. After Nina dissected the fish, it was discovered that the fish’s stomach contained microplastics.
Nina learned that one of the sources of plastic pollution in the river came from paper mills. Paper mills that dump waste into rivers are known to import used paper from developed countries such as the United States, Canada, Australia, the Netherlands, Germany, England, Japan and other developed countries.
As a form of protest to the leaders of developed countries that export waste, Nina sent a letter to the President of the United States, Donald Trump and the Prime Minister of Australia, Scott Morrison. Nina also met the German Ambassador, Peter Schoof at his office, through the German Ambassador to send a letter and 200 signatures of her school friends to the German Chancellor, Angela Merkel to stop exporting plastic waste to Indonesia.
“Please answer my letter and please stop exporting plastic waste to Indonesia and other developing countries,” said Nina.
“Please answer my letter and please stop exporting plastic waste to Indonesia and other developing countries,” said Nina.
As a result of her actions, Nina had the opportunity to be invited to be a speaker at the 2021 Plastic Health Summit forum held in Amsterdam, the Netherlands and one of the messages conveyed was Stop sending plastic waste to Indonesia. In the same year, Nina also came to England with the Implementers of COP26 or the 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference.
Most recently, Nina and her father were invited to attend the fourth Session of the Intergovernmental Negotiations Committee (INC-4) to develop a legally binding international instrument on plastic pollution, including in the marine environment.
It didn’t stop there, Nina and her community, River Warriors Indonesia, created an online petition entitled rejecting imported waste to Indonesia. Which has been signed by 400 thousand signed, please check here to contribute change.org/p/jokowi-indonesia-bukan-tempat-sampah-dunia
Nina is one of the environmental heroes who has done her best to care for the environment. As one of her efforts, through kitabisa.com Nina hopes for a lot of donation support to continue this action to reject imported waste through several activities :
- Investigating imported waste by tracing plastic waste that is carelessly dumped and the environmental impact by conducting air quality tests around the recycling industry area.
- Advocacy for the rejection of imports of plastic waste and paper waste contaminated with plastic waste through the campaign activities, exhibitions and lobbying to the government.
- Testing the microplastic content in wastewater from imported waste recycling factories.
