Fish Information

Every year, the Ecological Observation and Wetland Conservations (Ecoton) organization conducts a census and identification of fish in the fish sanctuary area of the Surabaya River. This activity aims to monitor biodiversity and the health of the river’s ecosystem, which is vital for life in the surrounding area.

The Surabaya River, one of the key rivers in East Java, plays a crucial role in supporting the life of various local fish species. The fish sanctuary in this river serves as a protective area, especially for endemic fish species that are threatened with extinction due to various factors, including pollution and habitat changes.

During each census, the Ecoton team observes the fish population, recording the number and types of species found. This identification process involves biologists and volunteers working together to ensure that the data collected is accurate and can be used as a basis for conservation policy-making.

The data from this census is also used to assess the health of the Surabaya River ecosystem. By understanding the types and numbers of fish living in this river, Ecoton can identify changes occurring from year to year, whether it be increases or decreases in population. The results of the census are then reported to relevant parties, such as local governments, to take necessary actions in protecting and restoring the river’s condition.

This activity is not only important for environmental conservation but also serves as an educational tool for the community about the importance of maintaining the cleanliness and health of the river. By learning more about the life in the river, it is hoped that the community will become more aware and actively participate in protecting their environment.
