To Save Surabaya River we have 5 activities
1. SURABAYA RIVER as NATURE LABORATORY
Brantas River has many functions and potency to support the human welfare. The river ecosystem possesses high biological diversity of natural herbal plants and fishery product that support economic gain of local community. There are hundreds of plants species, more than 100 macroinvertebrate species, 18 fish species and 22 waterfowl and bird species found in Surabaya River ecosystem. The river also has big potency to be developed as ecotourism site for various activities such as water sport, fishing, bird watching and camping ground. Unfortunately there is a wrong perception in the community that considers the main river function as disposal site for garbage and waste water. The waste disposal activity has polluted the river and threats the river function and river diversity.
2. SURABAYA RIVER YOUNG DETECTIVES
Since 2003, ECOTON develops Brantas River Young Detectives program for children and students along Surabaya River in Sidoarjo, Gresik and Surabaya District. The program aims to introduce children to Surabaya River biodiversity, river functions and threats. The program brings children directly to observe the river in Surabaya River Expedition by boat and train children to measure water quality and collect macroinvertebrate sample to indicate water pollution level. This program builds children awareness to respect nature and to save the river from further degradation. The young detectives asked to conduct field study in Surabaya River and share the information with other friends in their school and community by making educative and provocative media, such as sending letter to the governor in local newspapers, posters, drawings, or poetry in schools information wall.
3. POSKO IJO
Posko Ijo was initiated by ECOTON and BEJIS AUSAID to synchronize the role of companies, environmental management agency and the community to improve environmental quality in industrialized area in Driyorejo Gresik East Java. POSKO IJO encourages companies to optimize the waste water treatment process to control water pollution in Surabaya River. In POSKO IJO, local community, the companies and government tries to come with some alternative solutions to the river pollution problems. In meeting the objectives, the forum has mediated relationship between local community and the District Environmental Agency and Provincial Environmental Agency, and also the local drinking water enterprise. It also introduced the forum to industrialists in another area, established village level core groups to organize the environmental monitoring and provide training for the community to create environmental agent of change in each village.
4. RUWATAN SURABAYA RIVER
Ruwatan is a yearly traditional event celebrated on every Javanese ruwah month, to thank God for His blessing and pray for better living in the future. POSKO IJO initiated Ruwatan Kali Surabaya to pray for better environmental quality in Surabaya River that heavily polluted by untreated wastewater from human activities along the river. Ruwatan Kali Surabaya also reflects that human activities cause environmental degradation in Surabaya River. This event expected to encourage community awareness to improve water pollution in Surabaya River. The event created ritual ceremony to release fish juvenile into the river as symbol of life in Surabaya River and to improve the ecosystem stability from environmental pollution nuisance.
5. SUREC (SURABAYA RIVER ECOLOGY CENTER)
SUREC is environmental information center, it aims to build communities environmental awareness, knowledge, attitude and skill in order to encourage community participation in Surabaya River conservation. The information center will provide environmental information concerning Surabaya River water pollution ecology, river function and potency in supporting the sustainability of community livelihood and human welfare. The center also will provide environmental awareness program through Surabaya River expedition and Surabaya River Estuarine expedition, training of water pollution monitoring and facilitate environmental conflict resolution between companies and local community in Surabaya River Watershed. The center provides environmental trainings for the community and facilitates a multi-stakeholder dialog to build consensus and find solution for environmental problems in Surabaya River.
